Dear friends at and of XIE,
Every year a Times of India’s Engineering Supplement gives ratings of the Engineering Colleges in the country. Our Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE) did not participate in the Times’ survey. However, the Engineers Supplement page (21st May 2018, p. 2) has XIE’s name among the famous IITs and NITs in the list of Institutes “with high perceptual score”. I congratulate the faculty and staff for their great achievement and it shows that we are doing well and are inpar with NITs and IITs isn’t it?
You know what the acronym, XIE, stands for, but I would also see it as standing for a justified boast: “A Xavierite am I and that too an Engineer”! We can strut about because we are Xavierites, products of Jesuit Education, but we can do so with a swagger attached because of our specialty. For India to move forward and provide realizable goals for all its people, much shall depend on the number and quality of its engineers. And an engineer being a Xavierite can have no other motivation for this profession other than the quality of his work and the good of all his fellow citizens.
A Xavierite engineer in this digitally driven world will always be a discerning person, ever striving to choose and do good after having been constantly aware of one’s feelings, thoughts, attractions, repulsions, and whatever happens within. Such a one will not be emotionally carried away by public opinions or by fancy ads on streets, but will reflect and act on what God would do in his or her place. Most of all such a one will cultivate all the human qualities required for innovation and excellence that will benefit especially the powerless and disadvantaged ones in our country.
The principle that governs all of us: to develop in us conscience, commitment, compassion, competence, and niskama-karma. Through the deepening of our faith and the solidity of our knowledge, we are to build a world that is faith-filled, humane, just, and ecologically sustainable. I pray that being at XIE, all are oriented to achieve this goal.
In God we trust.
